Hicks Stone

On Friday, March 23, 2012 at 7 pm, The Heritage Society of Pacific Grove Lecture Series is proud to present Hicks Stone at the Pacific Grove Performing Arts Center on the P.G. Middle School Campus.

In this slide lecture, Stone’s youngest son and biographer, Hicks Stone, himself a practicing architect, documents the breadth of his father’s life and career. The lecture coincides with the debut of his book, Edward Durell Stone: A Son’s Untold Story of a Legendary Architect, being published by Rizzoli.

Monica Hudson

On Friday, February 10, 2012 at 7 pm, The Heritage Society of Pacific Grove Lecture Series is proud to present Monica Hudson at the Pacific Grove Performing Arts Center on the P.G. Middle School Campus. A longtime Carmel resident, Monica Hudson will reflect on her years on the Monterey Peninsula as she talks about her 2006 book “Carmel-by-the-Sea,” part of Arcadia Publishing’s “Images of America” local history series.

Ms. Hudson moved to the ranch at Pt. Lobos from her native Switzerland in 1972 as the bride of John Hudson, a member of one of the area’s pioneering families. She has enjoyed a long career with the California State Park system and is a sought-after guide in interpreting the cultural and natural history, architecture and art of the Monterey Peninsula. She gives regular tours for the Monterey Regional Parks District and creates custom tours through her historic walking tour company, California Legacy Tours. Come listen to this natural storyteller as she delves into Carmel’s past.

Stephen Palumbi

On Friday, October 28 at 7 pm, The Heritage Society of Pacific Grove Lecture Series is proud to present Dr. Stephen Palumbi at the Pacific Grove Performing Arts Center on the P.G. Middle School Campus. Dr. Palumbi will talk about “The Death and Life of Monterey Bay,” a talk based on the research for his book of the same name, which demonstrates the difference that ordinary citizens can make in creating diverse, sustainable ecosystems and economies.

Dr. Palumbi is the Director of Stanford University’s Hopkins Marine Station, a Pew Fellow in Marine Conservation and a senior fellow at the Woods Institute for the Environment.  His current conservation work centers on the genetics of marine reserves designed for conservation and fisheries enhancement, with projects in the Philippines, Bahamas and the western coast of the United States.

In addition to writing “The Death and Life of Monterey Bay,” Dr. Palumbi wrote “The Evolution Explosion: How Humans Cause Rapid Evolutionary Change” and appeared in the TV series, “The Future is Wild,” a computer-animated exploration of the possible courses of evolution over the next few hundred million years.

Dr. Susan Shillinglaw

On Friday, August 26 at 7 pm., The Heritage Society of Pacific Grove Lecture Series is proud to present Dr. Susan Shillinglaw at the Pacific Grove Performing Arts Center on the P.G. Middle School Campus. A renowned Steinbeck Scholar, Dr. Shillinglaw will talk about the work and lives of John and Carol Steinbeck during their time in Pacific Grove.

Dr. Susan Shillinglaw is a professor of English at San Jose State University and Scholar-in-Residence at the National Steinbeck Center in Salinas. Previously, she was director of the Center for Steinbeck Studies at San Jose State University and edited the award-winning journal Steinbeck Studies (previously The Steinbeck Newsletter). She has published widely on Steinbeck, most recently A Journey into Steinbeck’s California (2006), a travel guide and biography examining the impact of place on Steinbeck’s vision.

Currently she is working on a short biography of Steinbeck as well as a biography of his first wife, Carol Steinbeck. For the Steinbeck Centennial in 2002 she co-edited several collections: America and Americans and Selected Nonfiction (Viking); Beyond Boundaries: Rereading Steinbeck (Univ. of Alabama Press); John Steinbeck: Centennial Reflections by American Writers (Center for Steinbeck Studies).

She has also published numerous articles, introductions and has co-edited other volumes on Steinbeck. Professor Shillinglaw holds degrees from Cornell College in Iowa, and University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill. She has taught at Wake Forest University, Canisius College, The Buffalo Seminary, Santa Clara University, and since 1984, at San Jose State University.
